About

What Are Kei Fire Trucks?

Kei fire trucks (軽消防車, kei shōbōsha) are compact fire suppression vehicles built on Japan's kei-class (軽自動車) platform, designed to navigate the narrow roads, rural, or mountainous Japan.

These vehicles are widely used by Japan's volunteer fire brigades (shōbō-dan, 消防団) and are increasingly found internationally, prized for being typically low mileage and well maintained.

About This Project

The owners of these fire trucks are often left with incomplete vehicles due to part removal prior to importing, and there does not exist much in the way of comprehensive documentation for identifying replacements. Even with replacements identified, they may not be available.

In addition to providing documentation on the vehicles for educational reasons for owners and fans alike, the development of Computer Aided Design files (CAD) will allow for people to Fabricate replacements themselves or through a metal fabricator. With the advent of 3dprinting and direct-to-home fabrication services truck owners can make their vehicles a little more complete.

Special Thanks

The owner of this site would like to thank the below people and importers for helping identify parts and specifications:

  • JDM Offroad in Everett, Washington, USA graciously let us pull parts from some of their vehicles to take critical measurements and identify manufacturers and helping us source parts.
  • Ginza JDM in Auburn, Washington, USA managed to track down original paperwork for an owner's Sambar which included paperwork from the associated Fire Brigade in Yokohama to learn more about the vehicle history and use.
